Chronicles of Pakistan Day 3
Jul 6th
Sunday July 6, 2008 London
I arrive at 7am on time; didn’t sleep much on the plane and did not do much at all. The food was excellent on British Airways. I just watched TV shows and movies on the seat. The line for departing the airport with the landing card was long. Fortunately, my bag stayed checked in so I didn’t have to lug that around. It took 1.25 hours to get out. I got some cash converted and directions to the Underground.
As I was walking out I heard my name. Muna Uncle decided to pick me up. It was a nice surprise to see him, although, I would have preferred to take the subway so he wouldn’t have to drive 1.5 hours each way from his house.
There are 3 families in London who are somehow related on Tannu’s side. They are all siblings. I love all 3 of them. I’ve only spent time with them once before but they were amazing to us and treated us with an amazing amount of love. We spent about 1 week with them a year or two after we got married before we went to India. Muna Uncle and Ruksana Chachi and their 3 More >
Chronicles of Pakistan Day 2
Jul 5th
Saturday. July 5, 2008. Michigan and Chicago
I woke up sorted some papers and head out on my way. I had a long day ahead of me.
A noon flight out of Detroit, 5-hour layover in Chicago then a flight to London with a 12-hour layover. I arrived in London at 7am on Sunday with the time change and will try to see my relatives in West London who I have not seen in about 8-9 years.
Tannu will call them and let them know I am coming and directions on the subway. The Chicago layover is painful and the internet is not free so I eat and do nothing.
Nothing interesting happened this day.
Goals
Jan 24th
It is important to set goals in life whether they be yearly, weekly, quarterly or in my case, by semester. I believe in goals that are achievable and often times of no significance. No foolish goals of losing XX number of pounds. I want to do these things but I see no need for setting goals for these things. For instance, last semester (September to December 2007), I went from 170 something pounds to 155 lbs mainly from biking everywhere, doing push-ups and because it is hot, I eat less. Plus, my roommate, Neil, is a good cook and is very health conscious so he cooks healthy meals.
For this semester I have set the following goals:
1. I want to ace of my exams. I have 3 difficult classes so this will be tough
2. I want to get my roommate to dance in my presence without a group. I have tried to get him to dance to the humpty dance and walk like an egyptian but he refuses. This might be the toughest goal.
Trifecta
Jan 21st
Pretty uneventful day except for 3 things:
1. Took a shower, which I do daily, in case there are any doubts. In my half awake state, I brought a clean shirt and socks instead of underwear into the bathroom. After the shower, I went to grab the shirt of our washing maching.
I hesitate to call this maching a washing machine and am not sure why they create these machines apart from its portability. It needs a water source and a place to drain but has two compartments, one which agitates and one that spins similar to the the spinner you see in gyms for your swim trunks. Seems like it would be easier to have a one compartment washing machine.
I hit the ball of socks straight into the toilet. Of course, our toilet is not the cleanest. I fished it out and rinsed it off. I haven’t decided if I am going to throw them away or clean them.
2. I make coffee every morning and put it in an insulated thermos that uses the lid as a cup. I didn’t use to drink coffee but I read that cups a day of coffee (decaf or regular) significantly reduces the risk of More >
Mid Semester MD 1
Nov 28th
School is good, overwhelming for sure; lots to learn. I feel dumber and smarter. The island is peaceful. I snorkeled to school today. Normally, I ride my bike. It took about an hour to get to school. My roommate decided to skip class in the morning and forgot I snorkeled as he was supposed to bring my glasses and computer and dry clothes so I sat in class all wet and unable to see. It was funny (I have prescription goggles for snorkeling).
The snorkeling is amazing and the diving is supposed to be better I just haven’t gone yet. It is like swimming in a luke warm bathtub in terms of clarity with so many fish; it is amazing.
After a couple weeks here with Hibah and Tannu, I told them I think they should go back to States. There is nothing here for kids. no playgrounds, no sidewalks, and actually we barely see any other kids. I want Hibah to be around other kids. She can entertain herself with a couple toys but I didn’t want to deprive her of a joyous 3rd year of life because of my choice to come out here. That, of course, is the hardest part being out More >

Here is how my weekend has gone:
It was an eventful day on Friday. I studied a little in the morning. Couldn’t find a ride to Friday prayers so I took a cab.
Went to class for 4 hours then played in a ping pong tournament. Lost in the semis. My semi-final match was interrupted a few times because somebody lost their wallet . I ended up eventually losing. I was supposed to go to dinner with a few of the school staff for a birthday at 8pm but since somebody stole one of the students wallets during the ping pong tourney, we were at school until 9pm and I went to the police station and we left at 9:30. The birthday girl left because she said her mother was expecting her home at 9:30pm (she is 29 years old) so I went out to eat with a couple other people at a Mexican place in front of the school. It is owned by a Texan family. We ate for a couple hours and then I went home.
I got back to my place and there some guys on our porch drinking. They stayed there for an hour or so and then they More >
Movin’ on up
Sep 20th
With the family gone, I needed something to occupy my time so I decided to move to the resort, Harbor Village, across the street. I had a friend, Pyal, who lived there who said a couple places were opening up. The places were small one bedrooms where the living room was also the kitchen. But being alone, I really did not need much space. The price was $600/month which was only $50 more per month than what I was currently paying. My current place was a large bedroom in the Portobello complex which was across the street from the ocean. It had a swamp view and swamp smell if the wind was blowing the wrong way. It had a full kitchen, roomy living room, and large bedroom. The main problem was that it did not have glass windows. It reminded me on a place in India, where I have no desire living. The window had a screen that did not make a complete seal, with safety bars on the outside. To block wind and light, it had wood shutters that did not make a seal. The mosquitoes came in at their leisure.
Pyal, who knew the the manager of Harbor Village, convinced More >
